Surface Grinding Machine Review

A surface grinding machine is a kind of machine tool that is useful in giving a precision ground surface either to get the appropriate size or to give a good finish to the surface. Here is a brief review of such machines.

A Brief Review

The modern surface grinding machines are semi automatic in nature; they have the options for setting the depth of required cut, number of passes as well as spark-out. Once these are preset, they do not require much intervention of the operator thus making the work easier. Based on the usage and type of grinder, a typical precision of +/- 0.002 mm is attainable on most of the machines. Once the process is complete, there are provisions to remove the metal dust collected.

Types of Surface Grinding Machines

There are three types of surface grinders:

• Horizontal Spindle Machines (Peripheral): Such machines are used for high precision requirements on angled or tapered surfaces, flat surfaces, or recessed surfaces.
• Vertical Spindle Machines (Wheel face): This is used in cases where fast material elimination is required. A wheel’s face (cylinder, disc, or cup) is used on the surface.
• Disc Grinders: This has a wider contact area in between the work-piece and disc. They are available in horizontal as well as vertical spindle types; they work on either sides of the piece simultaneously.
